Preah Vihear Day Trip




Overview

This full day trip explores the incredible Preah Vihear temple, which staddles the Cambodian and Thai border.  As you journey from Siem Reap to Preah Vihear province you pass through typical Cambodian countryside allowing a chance to learn more about the way of life in these farming villages.  We explore the incredible monument and learn both about the temples ancient and more recent history.

Itinerary

7.00am
We depart from Siem Reap at 7am in a private vehicle for the journey to Preah Vihear.  This trip takes around 3 hours and travels through the Cambodian countryside.  Along the way you will see farmers tending the fields, buffalo and village life.  The countryside offers great opportunities for capturing some village life photos and stops along the way to take pictures are possible.

Arrive at Preah Vihear.

We stop just short of the temple at a Buddhist Pagoda providing the opportunity to visit the Pagoda and learn about the monks way of life.   We then travel by foot to Preah Vihear which sits at the top of the Dangrek Mountains.

Preah Vihear is known as the Temple Mountain which was built at the beginning of the 10th century as a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple had further works added to it  by the following three kings.  The temple today is still a Hindu site, but Buddhist Monks pray at the temple to the Gods.

The temple area consists of three stories surronded by two galleries.  Your guide will lead you through the temple area explaining the sites ancient and recent history.  The temple was declared a Word Heritage UNESCO site in 2008.

Enjoy your own picnic lunch in shaded area near the temple 

Depart for the trip back to Siem Reap.  On the way back we stop at Analong Veng the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge. Analong Veng was home to some of the Democratic Kampuchea (DK) leaders including Ta Mok and Pol Pot.  This location serves a good spot to spend a little time learning about Cambodias tragic recent history.  We visit Ta Mok's house hear some tales of times past.
